Name 5 requirements necessary to be positive about next year

Wow…

You care way more than most people. That post must have taken you an hour or more to put together.

I’m glad there are fans who are still interested and want to watch this team. My interest has waned considerably. It isn’t because they are losing so much, this team is just hard to watch because they look so bad doing it. I know the team is 3-9 but they look worse than previous BYU teams with lesser records. They just aren’t enjoyable to watch.

The best skill position players are from somewhere other than Utah Valley but BYU is very lazy in their recruiting efforts because they still go after a lot of players inside the state and when the population is only a few million that doesn’t give you a lot to choose from.

But hey, all those mormon kids in Utah grew up wanting to play for BYU so we have to let them live their dream… :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

One last thing here… I counted the roster of 118 players and no less than 40 had polynesian last names. There must be some others that are polynesian as well, but that is more than a third of the team. I am not sure but it seems like a bit of favoritism there as over half of the coaches are polynesian as well. Just an observation… in addition to the observation that just by looking at roster names there are probably 20 players who are kids of former players too. Seems high to me.

How can you recruit good players from out of state when you have that kind of situation going on? Just seems like it would be hard to feel like a player had a good opportunity to get playing time.

Eh…I write quickly and frankly I’ve already had this thought out in my head forever anyways. I don’t care so much that I live or die on win or lose like some people. I just think sports and games in general are fascinating problems to solve.

I completely agree on how painful this team is to watch. I can accept a loss, Stupid mistakes that cost us games…I can’t stand that. It offends my sense of problem solving and creativity, if that makes any sense. I think it’s a case of being smart enough to understand all the details but not smart enough to step outside of what you know and critique to come up with something new.

The utah valley thing actually drives me crazy because we miss some of the best Utah valley athletes! Gabe reed? Playing at stanford. That kid was phenomenal and couldn’t even get BYU to return their calls (family friends) Same thing for Briton Covey who was an excellent slot receiver for the Utes and gets back next year. But yeah lets offer the next Kaufusi brother, who let me tell ya, is slow as tar and gangly thin, but supposedly he’s going to be playing d line for us? ugh…

I don’t really mind the poly thing that much as long as they live up to the same standards etc. I also don’t mind legacy kids, especially if their dad played in the NFL and they look like him. But don’t just offer them to offer them. They can walk on if they don’t merit the scholarship. What I really want is more black kids especially at QB, WR, and DBs.

Ron
Sorry I wasn’t suggesting that you thought the great coaches would come from the temple recommend pool. You are a good guy and we can’t all agree on every point that is made and each of us are as fallible as the next guy, excluding the ridiculous posts that insult one’s intelligence. Hopefully next year brings a resurgence of BYU athletics. I agree with a previous post that suggests the talent pool at BYU is regressing, especially in basketball. These are all excellent posts and I appreciate all of the input. I do believe strongly that the HC needs to be revamped and not any stricter than what is needed to get a temple recommend. Thanks

Thank you Sundance.

I believe that we are on the same page and more alike than we are different.

I know that each of us, you and I, want what is best for BYU and particularily what is best for the Athletic Program at BYU.

I do not want to be part of the gerneration that lets BYU Quit or Fail. I want change that will keep BYU Athletics alive and well.

Clausewitz,

What I have to say, in no way is meant as criticism.

Like you, I believe in creating a lot of ideas to find one good one. I don’t think that there any real wrong or right answers on this site. I think that there are ideas that must be explored with an [ open ] mind. There are ideas that I don’t like and I don’t agree with, but that does not make those bad or wrong. I don’t say that my ideas are good or right.

What I do want, it to let those in power know that there are many of us that have great concerns that need to be dealt with in a positive, (not negative manner)

To me, lowering our standards to either being a mediocre G5 team, or a run of the mill FCS team, just so we can win more games, does not cut it for me, and I am totally against it. I hate being a QUITER.

I hate the idea that we are not willing to work harder for success. To me that is a form of QUITTING.

I hate the idea that we are too stubborn to make any changes that could help us be successful.

I want those in power to know that we care.

Winning games to me, at this point, is not as important as doing what is necessary to being a significant Athletic Program.

My ultimate goal is to be competitive force in a P5 program and be respected, not because we have the most strick Honor Code in the Nation, but because we love our neighbors as our selves and we judge not lest we be judged and we leave all judging to God and we get along great with everyone and don’t expect any special favors from anyone. I want to be known as a good, kind, friendly University to everyone that comes here. I know that this is more than most members would accept.

I totally agree with what I think you are saying about 4th down attempts. To be more specific, if we are deep enough into the opponents territory, say their 30, or 20, or 10 yard line, and we have 2 yards to go for a first down, We should have it automatically a 4th down attempt for the first down, unless the game indicates that we are not likely to make that 2 yards. We must keep in mind, that depending on our success or lack of success on 2 yard gains, a 3 point field goal is better than no points at all. If a 4th down conversion looks possible, 7 points is much better than 3.

One way or the other, we must put points on the board.

(Onside Kicks) is also a concern of mine. Not only does the kicker need to practice more, but also the intended receivers. Maybe we need to hire a specialist for this.

Spreading the field out is where we need more (4-5 star players) Sorry ! What I have seen has been frightful coming from the 0-1-2-3 star players that we have.

My observations has been this:

ON OFFENSE:

At BYU games, I never see anyone on the BYU team, run extra fast with outstretched arms to attempt to catch the slightly over thrown ball. We let it go as un-catcatchable.
I never see a receiver reverse his field and run back for a slightly short distant pass and dive for it. We let it go as uncatchable. I never see a receiver make adjustments to run to one side or another to go after the ball that is not exactly where it was intent did to be.
We let it go as an uncatchable ball. We seldom see anyone jump or dive for any ball at all. We don’t often enough, find a way to get open for the QB to deliver a pass to us.
WHEN WE CATCH THE BALL, WE FALL WITHOUT BEING TACKLED INSTEAD OF RUNNING FOR THE EXTRA YARDS. THIS HAPPENS OFTEN. (Is this strength training)

When watching P5 teams play, all of this is the natural and expected things that they do in each game, expect for falling after catching the ball which is almost never seen among P5 teams.

ON DEFENSE:

We wait for the receiver to catch the ball and than we tackle him after he has gained
10-20-30 yards or more.

P5 teams either try to intercept the ball, or if not possible, they knock the ball down, or if not possible, they block the ball so that it could not be caught, or if not possible, they strip the ball away for a take away. Rarely do they let the receiver keep the ball or complete the catch. They make total effort. Perhaps this is the(natural difference) between a 0-1-2-3 star player and a 4-5 star player. Perhaps somethings call for natural ability that can not be taught if that natural ability is not included in the process.

We need to be more committee group tackling not allowing the running backs and pass receivers run through us like we are soft butter. Too often they do.

Disclaimer:

I AM NOT SAYING ALL OF THIS TO COMPLAIN.

I am saying that we must improve.
I am saying that (possibly we are coaching the best we can with what we have.
As players, it is (possible) that we are doing the best we can.

I am saying that if we are playing vs teams that have many 4-5 star players , we will never be able to successfully compete if we do not have the same.

I am saying that if we are competing vs teams that have coaches that have EARNED the right to be
$5-$8 million + dollar coaches, we will never beat them with coaches that may or may not have earned the right to be $1 million dollar coaches.

I am saying that if we are not willing or able to make compromises and/or changes, what ever those compromises or changes may or may not be, we do not have the right to say that it is prejudice of others that keep us from achieving, but it is instead, our arrogance and and lack of ability to cooperate and get along with others that we want and that we need, to be a part of.

Okay. Scream at me for being honest.

Well I agree with a lot of that.

Receivers give up on routes and often run the wrong route and crowd another player. We seem to have speed and some are even good route runners, but then drops and bad passes doom them.

The yards after contact is a point of irritation.

Bend but don’t break only works in specific situations: you need to run clock, you have freak athletes who can make up for it and a pass rush, or you are a bad team and can’t do anything else and you’re hoping to stop then at the 15. Ugh.

Kalani has always said he wants to run an aggressive defense. Maybe he’s realizing he doesn’t have the pieces to do it the way he had before. Not saying he can’t, just that it may need to be done differently.

Clauswitz,

I think that each of us, you and I, have not had, as our intention, to criticise but instead to make suggestions for improvement.

Even the finest automobile could use improvement. One that does not run well, needs much improvement. That doesn’t mean that we don’t love our car, be it a great car or a clunker.

I agree with a lot of what you two say, but my issue is that Ron takes 20 words to say what could be said in 2 words.

Unfortunately so do I. I’m a decent writer and a great editor when I care to be.

thawk,

I am sorry that my writing exceeds your attention span. I will try to limit what I have to say in order to keep your interest. Thank you for the insight.

Ron

Thank you Clausewitz for your support.
